Pope Francis Notes Press Coverage on Expectations of Ordination of Women Priests

Kate McAlwee writes:

At the Oct. 4 opening session of the hotly anticipated Vatican summit on the future of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis said he had taken note of some of the press coverage about the "global expectations" for the assembly.

The example he gave to the some 460 delegates at the October 2023 Synod of Bishops? That the synod might decide to ordain women as priests!

Perhaps he saw the 12 meter-long "purple tent" we opened just before the synod began? Or maybe he got wind of our prayer vigil at the Basilica of St. Praxedes on the eve of the synod, championing the voices of women around the world?

Bridget Mary writes:

Maybe by now Pope Francis  has heard of Christina Moreira ARCWP  who -dressed in her priestly alb and stole-was in St. Peter’s Square blessing and ministering to pilgrims on Friday October 5th before her arrest by Italian police who confiscated her liturgical attire before her release!

A Day of Prayer in Assisi

Mary Theresa and I decided to do a pilgrimage to Assisi today in preparation for our upcoming week in Rome to share the ministries of women priests and our inclusive communities. Like St. Francis and St. Clare, we prayed that women priests will rebuild the Church by following Jesus’ teachings and example of compassion and inclusion at an open table in a Church for everyone.

Christina Moreira ARCWP- An Opening that Ended in Closure-- Herstory of Priestly Ministry in St. Peter’s Square and Arrest by Roman Police

Read Christina Moreira ‘s story of witness to priestly ministry in St. Peter’s Square translated in Spanish, English and French.

Christina Moreira ARCWP Witness to Priestly Ministry

Una apertura que acabó en cierre

An opening that ended in closure

Yesterday I participated in the opening Mass of the synod from the chairs at the back of St. Peter's Square in the Vatican, in the midst of my beloved people and enjoying seeing the faith of simple people, seeing how there is still hope and joy in so many and no longer in others.

I attend the so-called synod of the shadow to give voice to the collective that I represent here: the Association of Roman Catholic Women Priests.

This representation consists of simple and peaceful actions to make our ministries visible and to bear witness, in the reality of ordinary mortals, that there is also a desire to share that which "burns us inside" and gives us life: the following of Jesus who sent the Samaritan woman to announce that he was the messiah to the people of her village and Magdalene to proclaim his resurrection to her people. siblings. That following, that holy name is everything to us. It is our breath, our strength, our horizon and only purpose as Who is: the Way, the Truth and the Life.

That is why I chose to join with a group of courageous and strong women in the faith, capable of loving to the point of being excluded and punished by a system already condemned and that urgently needs to be reformed. Yes, urgently. The lives of little boys and girls are at stake. Together we walk, women and men of good will who work for the Kingdom with small and peaceful instruments: word and symbols, prayer...

So yesterday, to let people know that I had a Catholic priest by her side, I put on the alba (the robe to which every baptized person is entitled) and the stole that identifies me as obedient to the command to serve my sisters and brothers.

A policeman emerged, who called more policemen and I ended up in Italian police stations who assumed that a woman could not be a priest and that she was usurping a "talar habit" (sic). The rest of the uniforms and habits that populated the square at that time did not seem suspicious to them. After three and a half hours of deliberations for which up to eight male officers were present, they decided to apply a sanction to me in the form of a fine and confiscation of the said habits.

They released me without knowing that Christ set me free a long time ago, especially one day when he too was punished for saying who he was and his clothes were taken away. It is noticeable that the Pharisaic establishment has not lost good manners. Resorting to foreign force to perform their dirty and unjust tasks, violating freedom of expression among others is familiar to me.

I find myself at peace, with a long program of words and actions ahead with a large group of comrades with whom I will walk, sing, pray, think these days. I attest that we are going to embroider this synod and we will see on which side the shadow is.

From the heart of one who is called mother church I send you blessings and all kinds of wishes for peace and goodness, countless affections and a broad and friendly look "benevolent and welcoming" as the pope asked in his homily.

 Women’s Ordination Worldwide Press Release

Activists from around the world will assemble on the steps of the Roman church that contains a relic of Saint Mary Magdalene’s foot. The inscription by the reliquary reminds us that her’s was ‘the first foot to be entered into the tomb of the risen Christ.’ Recognised by the Vatican as the Apostle to the Apostles, Mary Magdalene is the model of priesthood for women, empowered by Jesus to go and tell his followers the Good News of his Resurrection. The women of WOW walk in her footsteps, urging the church to listen to the voices of women calling out for equality.

In the spirit of Pope Francis’ ongoing Synod on Synodality, a meeting to discern and attend to the needs of the church today, the demonstration will make visible the injustice of women’s exclusion from full participation in the life of the church.

If the church is truly listening, it must walk with women—especially those who have discerned a sincere call to priesthood— throughout the synodal process and recognize the vibrant and necessary gifts they bring to the church. If the church is to attend to larger issues of oppression, violence, and injustice in the world, it must begin with affirming women’s equality.

When: Friday, October 6th. Activists will gather at 2.30pm and begin to march at 3pm.

Where: Route begins at San Giovanni dei Fiorentini (Via Acciaioli, 2). We will proceed to Lungotevere Castello (where we have a permit to demonstrate) and some will attempt to process toward St. Peter’s Square, risking police interference.

What: Walk with Women is a witness organized by Women’s Ordination Worldwide, calling the institutional Catholic church to walk with women as equals and open all ordained ministries to people of all genders.

Who: Founded in 1996, Women’s Ordination Worldwide (WOW) is an international network of organizations and groups whose mission is the inclusion of Roman Catholic women in all ordained ministries. Founded on the principle of equality, WOW opposes all discrimination. ‘There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.’(Galatians 3:28)
